People & Bags & Vans

17 April 2008
After a crazy morning when things weren’t working properly and I was trying to get on a plane, I finally got my ticket & boarded the flight to Washington, D.C. Three some-odd hours later, I was waiting on the concourse at Reagan National Airport for the shuttle that would take me to the hotel. I sat on a post, lowered my camera to nearly street level and shot this:
Waiting for the Shuttle
Not the best shot of the day, but perhaps the most indicative of the style of day I had.
Cheers.

Chili's Tegestological Contribution

16 April 2008
Dinner at Chili’s with Ginger. Dinner with Ginger is always a treat, even when at Chili’s. I’m not overly fond of the place, but it is someplace where nearly everyone can get something that is palatable. And, they do make a decent margarita. I had the bad fortune to have a business trip planned on the day of and the day before Marita Beth’s birthday. So, we had dinner out tonight in celebration of my darling girl’s natal day. And…nary a photo taken aside from this tegestological close-up:
Pepper
Cheers.

Skull & Frog

14 April 2008
Went to work this morning, and was just leaving when I got a phone call from the wife. She requested that I drive to Dallas to meet with her, Larry, Denise & Allyson. Since, Larry & Denise were leaving the next day, I made the decision to go. I detest Dallas traffic. We had a lovely dinner at an overpriced Tex-Mex restaurant, then MB asked Ally to go open her Beading Dreams store for me. Lovely, lovely store. Please visit it.
While there, I talked Allyson in to selling me a little skull made of bone. This is it, next to a little tiny frog that has lived on every computer I’ve owned since 1997:

Right now, it’s just a pile o’fabric.  But, in a week and a half . . . voila!  It’ll be Joe’s new outfit!

Troy

Troy

21 April 2008

Happy Birthday, Anne!

After a very full day of “Monday Stuff” as I’ve come to call it, I had an appointment last night with good friends, Joe and Starr Capps.  Joe has honoured me by asking for me to make him a Tudor noble outfit.  So, in the coming days, I’m sure there will be photos here on the KRuMB of his fabrics and trims.  But, tonight, after designing and planning, and measuring, we all went out to dinner—the four members of the Capps family and Kyle and me.

As we so often do with friends, we introduced them to No Frills Grill, and we all enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and low prices that help earn the place its name.  We played some trivia and ate tasty food and enjoyed each other’s company.  Alex, the one-year-old, was a major focus for our table, as one-year-olds are wont to be.  I was especially entertained and charmed when I learned that no matter how upset he is before, once he spots the camera pointed at him, all is well!  The way he smiles and flirts with the camera would put most super models to shame.  I tried to take a number of photos, but all of them came out blurry or just plain bad.  I know Kyle got at least one really good shot, so I suspect that when he posts for this date, Alex will be his subject.  But, fourteen-year-olds hold still better!

My photo is of Troy, Starr’s firstborn son.  I know I’ll probably embarrass him a little, and for that I’m sorry.  I hope he’ll forgive me.  But, Troy has always been one of my very favourite kids.  He was only slightly older than his little brother is now, when Kyle and I first met him and Starr.  We often brag about this wonderful kid that used to go everywhere the adults went, and would just curl up under the table when he got tired and go to sleep, no matter how loud the music!  He knew his way around the Scarborough Faire site better than I do now, by the time he was about seven!  He’s always been the most polite, best-behaved, most socially comfortable kid I’ve really ever known.  And, now, he’s a teenager, and his voice has deepened, and he (and his mom) gave me a photo of him with a date at a prom, for my birthday!  He plays football and the saxophone.  He’s taking Latin and is in a gifted and talented program at school.  He was an active part of costume discussions last night at the house, and despite the earphones (I mean what self-respecting teenager goes anywhere without his MP3 player?), he participated in dinnertime conversation and trivia playing as well!  This is one awesome kid.

I know that they say raising a teenager is like trying to nail jello to a tree—I love that analogy—but I’m thinking that all the amazing parenting that Starr has done, and that now, Joe admirably assists with, is making this kid a little bit easier to wrangle!

Okay, so if he reads this, he’ll blush.  But, at least he’ll know who to come ask for a reference letter for his college applications! ;-)

Happy Birthday, Kit!

Unbelievable to me, that at faire, with thousands of things to make beautiful photographs—this is it for me.  The only photo is of a swatch of fabric that Nicole needs to see for a special order customer.  Sad.

Frippery Witch

13 April 2008
Our good friends, Mike & Marlane, own a fantastic shop at Scarborough Renaissance Festival called Fripperies. Years ago, they occupied the building that East Wind Games now owns; since then, they have rebuilt their base on the other side of the festival. We don’t get to see them very often, but we do try to get over there as often as we may. MB still provides Michael with fabric for some of his fantastic creations. This is one of them:

Chocolate Birthday

Chocolate Birthday

19 April 2008

Day Two of my birthday!  I love that!  My family has always been pretty big on stretching birthday celebrations into multiple days . . . thanks, Mama!   So, it was a wonderful surprise, when despite the fact that my birthday was yesterday, many, many of my friends at faire were determined to have fun celebrating with me today!  I got roses—one from Kimbelle and one from our friend James.  Then, midway into the day, I ran across the street to East Wind Games to give Kyle a tiny pin I’d bought for him (one that says: “I’m a pirate; this IS my business suit”) and turned around to leave, only to find myself completely surrounded by pirates!  The crew of The Blazing Sun had all crept into the shoppe behind me, and proceeded to present me with a birthday card, a song, and an adorable little cake, decorated with the Blazing Sun logo!  I nibbled on that throughout the afternoon, and later in the day, there appeared on my counter, a huge, decadently chocolate-y, chocolate cake, decorated with chocolate shavings, truffles, and my favourite milk chocolate squares filled with caramel yumminess!  This one was gifted on behalf of my wonderful staff and of course, had Miss Mary’s fingerprints all over it!  Just looking at this photo is practically guaranteed to make you hungry!

I had a silly realization when the day first began to turn toward an extension of the birthday event—if I celebrate for two days, I only have to claim 23 years per day!

Note:  Incidentally, our research has finally resolved the question of identification of the curious caterpillar I used as my photo a few days ago.  I narrowed it down to the fact that it was a variety of Tussock Moth.  Then, the wonderful people at whatsthatbug.com further solved my mystery by writing to me, and informing me it is a Yellow Based Tussock Moth.  Here’s a photo of what he’ll be after metamorphosis.  In fact, they not only emailed me personally, but my letters and their response, actually got included in their wonderful website!  I’m so proud!
