The New Furnace

The New Furnace

13 August 2008

It is Funky Formal night, and I’m not there.  Weird.  I can hear the music—they’re doing the limbo right now.

In the past, when I’ve missed this annual event, it’s been because I was in Texas.  But, this time, I’m here—I’m just a little too busy to gift myself with a night off, when I’m going to be taking most of the next two days off!  So, I worked in the workshop, from about four o’clock until about eleven.  And, now, I’m back in my little house where I’ll spend the next couple of hours replacing the beads on a skirt I’ll want to wear this weekend.  I expect it’ll be pretty darned late by the time I go take a shower and crawl into bed.

I sewed for the whole second part of the day, but my photo today is representative of the first part of my day.  I spent six hours today in the glass studio!  Woo hoo!  First time this season, and I’ve really been missing it!  Finally, my schedule and the gaffer’s, both allowed for me to be her apprentice today.  I didn’t do a whole lot, and in fact, I know Shannon could have done everything we did today, completely alone.  But, I also know that I was a help to her, and enabled the work to go faster and smoother.

The new furnace is pretty neat—it’s bigger and hotter and newer and at first a little intimidating.  But, I actually found it easier to gather glass, and was using the stands as leverage much better than I ever have before.  I didn’t actually “blow” glass today, but I did lots of little gathers, and marvering, and a little bit of paddling.  And, quite a bit of torch work.  I helped make pumpkins!  I’d never even seen Shannon make a pumpkin before, much less assist with one.  But, now I have!  After filling the leer with pumpkins, we worked on refilling the supply of broken shards Shannon uses in making her fairy balls.  And, then, we charged the furnace (we added glass “batch”, and turned the furnace up).  My job there, was to simply man the door of the furnace (it’s so nice to have a door!), but it made me think . . . absolutely every minute job in that studio is a great learning experience.  I started the day, a little bit trepidatious about the new furnace, and now, just a few hours later, I’m very comfortable with it.  The pipe handling felt familiar and comfortable.  The paddle natural in my hands.  It was certainly very validating to know I didn’t forget everything in the interim ten months.

The only other photo worth uploading to Flickr today, was the one I took of Bailey, one of Shannon’s incredible dogs.

Lampwork Glass Beads

12 August 2008

Weird day.  I was awakened, again, by one of those annoying and disconcerting tachycardia events.  So, although I’ve learned to be able to doze during this, it certainly doesn’t qualify as sleep.  It’s not even as good as the sleep you can sneak in between alarm snoozes.  It’s more like . . . oh, I don’t know.  It defies explanation.  Suffice it to say, that when I finally crawled out of bed around eight o’clock, I was tired, drained and feeling a litte dizzy and out of breath.  Isn’t that a fine way to start a morning?

It was about nine-thirty before it quit, and at 11 a.m. I had a massage therapy appointment.  I probably should have skipped that, but it’s a commitment, so hopefully there will be some long-term benefit, ’cause I actually felt worse as I got up,  than I had before I got on the table.  But, the good news there is that my neck popped again!  Woo hoo!

I wasn’t feeling well enough to eat lunch, so my second meal of the day was leftovers at about seven p.m.  I managed to get one errand done, thanks to Stephen’s offer to drive me to the bank.  And I worked for a little while in the evening.  But, mostly, I’m afraid, the day was a wash.

I did get some further organization of my little living space done in an effort to make more room for Kyle this weekend.  In the process, I snapped this photo of the bauble on a key ring I bought a few years back at the Main Steet Ats Festival in Fort Worth.  I just found out this weekend that we have a friend/colleague here at the faire that makes such beautiful lampworked beads . . . I must investigate! :-)

Salt, Ice and a Straw

Monday again.  Ian needed to hit the road toward Michigan today, so we tried to top off his visit this time, with a memorable visit to Kenosha’s classic and famous, Franks Diner.  Ian and Delaenya and I, met Stephen at the diner, and enjoyed a delightful breakfast/brunch, complete with our favourite surly server, Mike.  Ian seemed genuinely pleased with the experience!  So far, everyone I’ve been there with, has enjoyed it immensely.  Friday morning, I hope to take Kyle there, too!

There was local erranding and post-officing, and another impromptu meal with friends.  Then, there was an evening of more paperwork and getting my space ready to share with my husband.  Today’s photo isn’t very interesting, and it’s actually rather sad.  I’m really more of a “glass full” sort of gal! ;-)

My Bristol "Breakfast Club"

My Bristol "Breakfast Club"

Happy Birthday, Delaenya!

Sunday morning.  We all start a little slower on Sundays.  More coffee is needed to get the day going.  Kelly and I have breakfast together nearly every morning here, and Sundays are no exception.  The difference is that we are also joined by any number of other friends, neighbours and employees. On this particular Sunday morning, I decided to snap a photo of the little ragtag bunch of folks in the MBistro.  Pictured, left to right, is Drew, Ian, Maron, Kelly and Delaenya.  Drew works for Excalibur.   Ian is my friend, the Pendragon Costumes manager in Michigan who stopped to spend this weekend with us on his way through from Colorado.  Maron is the dear friend who is a bigwig for Verizon and who helps me in the booth on weekends for fun!  It was to Maron’s house that a bunch of us trekked a couple of weeks ago for Cuban food.  Kelly, of course, is my beloved, of the triumverate, and Delaenya is a newer, but incredibly dear friend, who manages for Shannon of Girl Glass.  And today is her birthday!

Since Delaenya and George were dressing up today, and Kelly decided to don beautiful duds as well, the gauntlet was down, and I decided to attempt to rise to the challenge.  I put on an outfit I am pretty sure I hadn’t worn in at least two years.  And it worked out fine—I felt pretty all day.  I got to take one long walk with Ian in the early afternoon, too—my first real time for any shopping this season.  It was nice to get out, and I spotted more than a couple of things I’d like to go back out and purchase!  No surprise, there, I’m sure.

One thing in particular I spotted that spoke to me, was a charming bag from Grichels.  These talented folks make a product that is, in a nutshell, three-dimensional, leather faces, with taxidermy eyes, adorning everything from notebooks and purses, to tissue boxes!  I have admired the work for years, and in fact, many years ago I purchased half a dozen or so of the little notebooks to give as gifts to my booth workers.  Ian, being the sneaky little guy he is, passed information along to Kat and hours later, my wonderful crew of booth workers gifted me with the very bag that had spoken to me earlier in the day!  I was surprised and speechless . . . and moved to tears.  I have a great staff this season, and the fact that they love their work and apparently love me enough to give me such a special gift . . . well . . . it’s a reminder of how genuinely blessed I am.

I love my little Grichel bag, and in fact, I’ve been carrying it as my purse, even though it doesn’t hold quite enough stuff to make me really comfortable!  I’m learning to carry less, ’cause I love carrying this bag!

Dinner at Chili’s and then home to paperwork and another late night chatting with Ian.  It was a good weekend, with spectacular weather, and sales reflected that.  I am delighted to report that this show is finally looking like it might regain some of the ground lost by last year’s terribly soft performance.

I’m okay with that!

Brush & Scissors

9 August 2008
The battery for my trusty Canon Powershot SD850 ran out of juice a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced the charger – most likely I left it in a hotel recently. Consequently, I’m using my old Canon Powershot S1 IS which although is a wonderful, faithful little camera, it’s a little more difficult to tote about. So, I didn’t take it with me when I left the house today as I can’t just put it in my pocket, and I’m not going to leave it in the car where the interior temperature can easily reach upwards of 150 degrees in this Texas heat. I’ve purchased a replacement, I can only hope it arrives before I head on vacation on Thursday. In the meantime, I’m using my elder Canon and will take what photos I may while still sticking to my commitment of at least one photo per day.
This is what the results are when I don’t take my camera:
Brush & Scissors
Cheers.

Blink

8 August 2008
I’ve written recently about eye troubles I’m having. The troubles are off and on, but seemingly more on than off right now. On this day, my eyes were, judging from the number of comments by colleagues, bright red; so, since this little bottle of Blink was such a major part of my day, it became my photo of the day, too.
Blink
Here’s hoping that my eyes are LASIK-compatible, as I will be going for my free consultation & preliminary measurement in early September.
Cheers.

Just Me & the Dogs

7 August 2008
I, sadly, had to put my wife back on a flight to Chicago today. It’s been a real pleasure having her home two different times during the run of her festival; and, I get to go up to her part of the country next week (keep your finger crossed). But, for the moment, I’m alone again with just the dogs to keep my company.
Here’s ‘Tia performing her magical spread-eagle flying trick. She’s quite agile, really.
Flying 'Tia
I think I need to buy her a new soccer ball soon; that one is a little worse for wear.
Cheers.
