Out With the Old

22 April 2009
After months of complaining and an appropriate amount of sucking up to the boss, I finally got the company to replace my aging, failing Treo. It was replaced with a shiny new MotoQ 9c. Not the best phone on the planet, but a damn sight better than what I’d been suffering with.
The first thing I did with the new phone (after charging the battery of course) was to take this photo of my old phone on top of the new instruction manual.
Hello MotoQ. Good Riddance Treo
I cannot tell you how relieved I am to have a phone that does what I want it to do when I want it to do it.
Cheers.

Guinness 250

20 April 2009
Had a gathering at Ginger’s this evening to celebrate the "grand opening", if you will, of her new feast/dance hall that she had added to the back of her house. It’s a truly beautiful thing and I must confess to certain amounts of jealousy. But, I’m delighted for her. She invited friends from the two big aspects of her life that rarely, but on occasion do, cross paths. Her Swing dance partners/friends and her faire family/friends. It was a diverse and enjoyable group.
My evening was made complete with the enjoyment of the Guinness 250 I had brought with me.
Guinness 250
This is the first new Guinness product to arrive in the U.S. since 1967 and I intend to take full advantage of its limited release. Rumour has it that only 700 cases arrived for distribution in Texas. It’s a bit pricy, but so tasty that I dare say it’s largely worth that price.
Cheers.

Display Idea

Display Idea

21 April 2009

My driver’s license expired on my birthday, so my most important errand this week, was to get my butt to the little local DMV office and get my picture made! I did that today.

Who knew that just a couple of doors from that office, is a sweet little antique/junk store? And who knew there would be so much cool stuff in such a teensy place? I enjoyed myself in there, and had a great visit with the guy who owns the place. During my exploration of all he had crammed in there, I located this neat little display unit for sale. I snapped its photo and meant to show Kyle because I think it has potential for East Wind Games. I have started to tell him a number of times and my train of thought keeps getting derailed. So, I guess this is as good a method as any, since it’s the only photo I took on this day! Do you like it Kyle? Have a use for it? Let me know. I’ll go back and get it if you can use it!

Muzette

Muzettee

20 April 2009

After far too long without the buzz of partying friends, Ginger’s house was the scene on this evening, of a gathering of her friends from both the renfaire and the swing dance aspects of her life. It was a fun little crowd, and it was her first opportunity to share the addition to her home—the new room she had built onto her dining room/kitchen! She’s calling it a dance room/feast hall, and it’s potential is nearly endless!

Another fairly recent addition to her life is this beautiful little (okay, not so little) cat she named Muzette. Last summer, one day at Bristol, the voices in Ginger’s head directed her to go to the animal shelter “now.” When she arrived, she found this little (at that time) kitten and upon making her choice, stood there while the euthanasia order was cancelled. Not only was it Muzette’s last day at the shelter, but the time was five-fifty five. At 6 p.m., she’d have been another casualty in the battle against unwanted pet pregnancy and the need for spaying and neutering our domestic animals. As it is, now, she’s a charming, affectionate cat that easily steals hearts and looks so like Ginger’s last beloved feline, that it causes many of us to blink with disbelief. She’s a beauty, that’s for sure.

Thanks, Ginger for getting folks together, and opening your lovely home to us, again! We love you.

Reaching for the Light

Reaching for the Light

19 April 2009

Late, late Sunday night, after a long, playful, reasonably busy weekend at faire—I’m exhausted. I stayed up long enough to get my inventory properly recorded and reported to California. But, with the rest of the household fast asleep, doing the money numbers while that tired would be a bad idea.

These pretty green leaves are in a pot in the dining room, under the lamp I frequently leave on at night. As I was shutting down my computer, the vibrant shade of green caught my eye and I decided to photograph it. Good thing, too, ’cause I hadn’t touched my camera all day.

Of Birthdays and Pirates

Pirate Trim

18 April 2009

My birthday on a faire day!  That certainly has both pros and cons, but for the most part, it’s pretty darned cool to celebrate your birthday on a festival day.  On the pro side, you are surrounded by many of your favourite people, and many more that think you’re special enough to wish a happy birthday.  So, hugs, kisses, happiness wishes and even cards and gifts are the order of the day.  Some gifts are  pre-meditated—like the wonderful goody bag Starr and  Joe and Troy and Alex brought to me, filled with scented candles and a unique set of little candle holders and even some snacky foodstuffs.  Or the super-smelly-in-such-a-good-way handmade soap from Mia.  Or the bottled yumminess that Jorge and Tracy presented to me.  Some are labours of love like the lovely necklace that Robert made for me of sterling chain maille and blue goldstones.  Some are gifts of sharing—like the perfect lunch of baked brie and creme brulee that Allyson brought me from the dinner her dad cooked the night before.  Or the delicious brownies baked by Stefanee.  And, some are totally impromptu, spur of the moment,  acts of not-so-random kindness like the cup of mocha cappucino and the glass of meade brought to me by some favourite customers.  And, so special are the gifts of talent brought by my performer friends.  Songs sung just for me—jokes told at my expense—entertainment at its finest.  Even the King and Queen sang to me their version of “Happy Birthday!”  And, the flowers!  Always on a birthday at faire, there are such wonderful flowers!  It really simply isn’t possible to not have fun when you celebrate your birthday at faire!

On the “con” side is the fact that at least for me, a faire day is a work day.  I had cleverly arranged with my staff to take at least a small portion of the day off.  With most of them so new, and only Garry able to write sales for me, I figured I wouldn’t wander farther than across the street to East Wind Games.  But, as it was Blazing Sun Pirate Invasion weekend, I figured I’d play a few games, and see the Queen Anne’s Lace shows on the stage right across from our booth, and although having fun, never be out of sight of my staff if they should need me.  The weather played right into my plan, because the skies were grey all day and the weatherman had forecast at least a 40 percent chance of rain.  (We later learned it did rain throughout the metroplex and even to the south of us.)  So, the crowd was small, and my booth staff would have been quite able to handle nearly everything.  But, as the fates would have it, Garry came down with a violent stomach virus and was too sick to leave his RV, much less come to work and breathe on everybody.  So, I worked all day, wrote every sale (of which there were far too few), and celebrated from within the booth.

I did have one brief foray into the lane in front of the shoppe, where as a relatively new member of the crew of the Blazing Sun, I was made to “walk the plank”—an initiation rite of sorts.  Fortunately, the plank is a very wide board, and although there was plenty of mud nearby, it was placed over solid ground, with no threat of a wet mis-step!  And, that brings me to one of my very best birthday presents—-gravel!  Yep!  It seems the festival, after many years of trying to convince grass to grow in the small shady stretch of land between the Pendragon Costumes shoppe and the lane, finally gave up.  In the interest of patron safety and long-term bang for the buck, they brought in a huge load of pea gravel and spread it out in front of our shoppe!  No more mud!  This should translate to less damage to our rugs, less upkeep on our floors, less worry about garments falling off hangers or mannequins tipping over.  I did a serious happy dance, and I jokingly am considering the gravel to be my birthday present from the faire!  Thank you, thank you, thank you, to our faire owners and managers.

After the day was done, we hemmed and hawed about dinner plans.  It seemed there were in fact no plans—the curse of an alpha’s birthday!  Your loved ones are so used to you making the plans that if you don’t, nobody else does either! ;-)   So, we decided to use the lack of planning  and the lateness of the hour as excuses to visit the Junque rather than leave the site for food.  So, off to the on-site rennie evening hang-out we went where we enjoyed very tasty food, great live music, and excellent company.  Quiet hours begin at 11 p.m., so we were back at Ginger’s booth soon thereafter where we continued to enjoy our drinks and each other’s company ’til after midnight.  By then, we were all dragging and it was  “school night” after all, so off to bed we went.  All in all, it was a very good birthday.

I was having enough fun, that I didn’t capture any of it on film!  My only photos of the day were two I took of this pirate coat that Nicole made.  I have a customer that wants to know if she can get this same trim in Silver.

Copper and Patrick

19 April 2009
Sunday at faire. Sundays always start slow as people go to their churches first. This Sunday never really did pickup. Somehow, I still only managed three photos all day.

El Capitan

18 April 2009
The natal day of my dear wife. Happy Birthday!

One of things I like best about owning a game store is getting to play all the cool games I carry. This is one such game. A true gem with classic Euro mechanics and lots of crunchy bits.
El Capitan
One of the measures of a game for me, probably one of the most important measurements, is re-playability. This one has that in spades. Every game is different because of the way the mechanics work. Quite clever. The game is El Capitan, and should you get the opportunity, play it and then buy it.
Cheers.

Cedar Waxwings

17 April 2009
Friday and the skies opened in a deluge. Truly, I spent much of the day worrying about the state of the faire-grounds under/after all that water. But, by the time I headed southwards it was mostly done and gone.
These little guys certainly didn’t seem to mind the rain. There were literally hundreds of them that flit about and lit atop the tree just outside my boss’s window. We are on the fourth floor, and the topmost Cedar Waxwings, for that’s what they are, were just about eye-level.

Houseful of Giesens!

Houseful of Giesens! 16 April 2009 Splitting my time today between housecleaning and sewing, I had just reclaimed the Mickey Suite (guest room) to a level of acceptability, when I bounced out the front door to toss some recycling, and there on my front porch, were Larry and Denise!

It is the weekend of their annual pilgrimage to Texas to see us and Allyson and to enjoy a couple of days at Scarborough Renaissance Festival. Soon after their arrival, Allyson called and we arranged for her to come to our house, knowing she and Kyle would arrive at about the same time, and dinner would be soon to follow. In an effort to be budget-conscious, and keep it quick and simple, we ended up at No Frills Grill. Surprise! Rod joined us there, too and there was good food (my burger was excellent tonight!) good beer, fun trivia, and the best company! I snapped this photo at the house before we left for dinner. Allyson had just arrived and was admiring my new birthday present from Larry and Denise—a much-needed set of new Henckels kitchen knives! Woo hoo! You can just see the tops of them on the table. I got a brief lesson in the proper usage of each knife, and I have two new Japanese words to learn. And, I need a wooden cutting board, now, that is bigger than a postcard! Sherrie! — are you reading this? I’d sure like to have one made by a dear friend!

Incidentally, tonight’s dinner out was made possible by the difficult decision that Larry’s outfit was not going to be completed this week. So, with the slightly lowered self-esteem that results from me not meeting my own expectations of myself, and the knowledge that I’d disappointed him, I must search for the silver lining here. I was able to enjoy the evening with loved ones and get a decent night’s sleep! And Larry will have a brand new outfit for the opening weekend of Bristol! ~MB
