Gaffer and Girl

5 September 2009

In less than a year, these two wonderful women pictured today in my photo will be more legally joined! Tonight was their “engagement party.” I’m choosing to write about this in a far less elaborate tone than is my preference, for one reason only: Shannon wants to hold her mom’s hand, look her in the eye, and tell her she’s getting married. Since she’s here, and will be for a while, she won’t get to do that for another week or two. So, shhhhh . . . . don’t tell!

The party was lovely, hosted by the girls at Native Earth Footwear, and attended by at least thirty or forty folks. I was proud to be there, and even more proud to be introduced as a part of the “committee.”

It was established about two years ago, that some of us have better taste—or at least better judgement—than others when it comes to choosing a life-partner. For those that have issue with choosing well, it has been decided, that his or her choices will in the future be required to meet inspection and approval by the committee!

Kyrana meets everyone’s approval! Congratulations to Shannon and Kyrana!

Basket on a Friday

4 September 2009
Much like Thursday, I have no clear memory of Friday either. I really must write about my days closer to the actual event for as I get older, my memory slips bit by bit.
This is a photo of a basket that rests atop the armoire in the bedroom with focus on the ribbons that festoon it.

Cheers.

Drawer Full of Non-Memories

Drawer Pull
Frankly, this day was so long ago, I can’t even begin to tell you what prompted me to take a photo of a drawer pull; or even tell you how my day was. Was it great or was it shitty? Was it blah or was it exciting? I have no memory of the day. But, I do have a photo of a drawer pull with which to remember the day.
Cheers.

Making Toast on Final Friday

Making Toast

4 September 2009

Yes . . . this is our gaffer, Shannon Jane Morgan, of Girl Glass fame. Maker of beautiful goblets and other glassware. And she is indeed pictured here, working in front of the “glory hole,” with a tool in hand. However, a quick inspection of this photo will reveal, not a pipe or punte in her hand . . . no molten glass about to be a bowl or drinking vessel. Nope. This is Shannon making toast!

On midsummer days at Bristol, we ladies frequently gather for breakfast, Kelly and I at the least, in what we’ve come to call the MBistro—the lovely little zone we’ve created behind my shoppe. It’s a paved area, complete with giant umbrella for shade and a table and chairs enough to accomodate my “morning friends.” I buy plants each year when I arrive, and do some container gardening to brighten up the place. I love it, and it is a great way to start the day. But, in the last three weeks or so, since autumn seemed to arrive so early here this season, we’ve instead more often gathered for our breakfast and coffee, at the Glass Studio, where, when it’s really chilly, we can sit around the furnace for warmth, and should your coffee get cold, a couple of minutes on top of the furnace and you’re good to go! (It’s a great late night spot, too, ’cause the fire keeps the mosquitoes at bay!)

This morning, I’m afraid I awoke later than normal, and when I rounded the corner at the studio, this is what I saw . . . Shannon decreeing a toaster unnecessary!

Final day of production for the Bristol 2009 season—busy crafters everywhere! We’re supposed to be in store for an absolutely gorgeous weather weekend! Woo hoo!

Glasses after Champagne

Glasses

3 September 2009

The final production week of Bristol is flying by so fast it’s staggering. I’m not sure how it got to be Thursday already, but here it is. After a pretty productive workday, a gaggle of five women piled into Ginger’s truck and headed to Milwaukee to meet Larry and Denise for a Champagne Tasting at their favourite wine place—Waterford Wine Company.

This is a charming wine boutique, featuring personal service in a quaint old house-turned-storefront, with a classy tasting room upstairs.  Kelly had experienced the place before, as have the Giesens, but  the rest of us had only heard the stories.  None of us were terribly enamoured of the tasting being for champagne, rather than some other form of wine, but neither were we prepared to be choosy.  We had by necessity, missed the other two Waterford tasting events of the summer. and this was our final chance.  And add to that the notion of sharing the event with such dear friends, and our attendance was a sure thing!

We girls left the faire site at around 4:30 p.m.—Ginger, Kelly, Kyrana and Shannon and me, with an eye on getting to Milwaukee early enough for dinner before the tasting.    That worked out okay, and we ended up dining at Cempazuchi,   a sweet little place featuring the cuisine of South America.  I had delicious salmon tacos and some ceviche!   We finished there, stopped into a coffee shop for Shannon to order up an espresso, and then on to the Waterford Wine Company.

The man who owns the place, Ben, is an extremely useful guy.  He is terribly knowledgeable about his wares, and rather fully entertained us with his chatty method of teaching a portion of what he knows, as we sampled his wine.  Nine different champagnes in all, I believe, and the most important lesson I learned, was not to be romanced by the price tag. We tasted modest bottles that were great, and pricey bottles that were so-so, and everything in between.

For more photos I took this evening, visit my Flickr stream.

While I would have preferred a more intimate gathering (we did share the tasting with a second group of six or seven folks) it was a wonderful evening spent amongst good friends and I wouldn’t have traded it for the world.

Thanks, Larry and Denise!

Congratulations, Kyle!!

2 September 2009

There seems to be no photo from me, today. I have no good excuse . . . other than that my mind was not on me today . . . not on my responsibilities. It was instead, on Kyle. Almost exactly three weeks after he tossed his hat in the ring for a promotion at work—he got it! I was so excited and so proud of him, that all else was secondary.

In other news . . . the Pendragon Costumes shop at Bristol now has a new roof! Woo hoo! Perhaps if I’d been a little more on the ball, I’d have taken a photo of the roofer, or the new roof, or something. But, no.

Oh well. Like I said . . . more important things happened today!

Congratulations, sweetheart. I love you.

Bryan and the Legitimate Bastards

2 September 2009
PubGuys PubCast #5 was recorded at the Royal Falcon in West Ft. Worth. We had two PGs come to the recording session. Great fun and good beer was had by all – except Bryan who drank Bud Light all night long.
As we were finishing up, the band that plays on Wednesday nights showed up to start setting up. We struck up conversation and ended up with permission to use their music in the final edit of PubCast #5. How very cool of the Legitimate Bastards to allow us to include their music. Thank you, Legitimate Bastards!
Here is Bryan and his Bud Light enjoying the Legitimate Bastards on stage at the Royal Falcon.

In my fridge, as you can imagine, I keep beer. In the summer, I also sully the fridge with some Anheuser-Busch products in the form of Bacardi Mojito. It’s a fine, refreshing drink that goes down easy and is quite, for an Anheuser-Busch product, tasty.

Guinness Matt

31 August 2009
One of the things about being a PubGuy that I look forward to, and in fact enjoy very much, is the discovery of new bars – or at the very least visiting bars that I haven’t been to in quite a while. Today, Terrill & I arranged a trip to the West side of Ft. Worth to visit the Royal Falcon and meet with the owner, Nick. A warm discussion secured us permission to record at not only the Royal Falcon, but also at Nick’s other pub, the Bull & Bush. I took this photo – the only photo I took today – while sitting at the bar at the Royal Falcon.

Cheers.

Purple and White

Purple and White

1 September 2009

I have outstanding friends. And, I’m lucky enough that some of those friends choose to work for me, despite my idiosyncracies. And, the wonderful friends that work for me here at Bristol are really good at sneakily paying attention to comments I make about liking something, or wanting something, and then, POOF! There it is.

That’s what happened this past weekend. I had it on my list of things to do, to go and price the six foot long Tibetan Lamb scarves at the sheepskin booth. I have a couple of them that I dearly love, and was hoping for a new colour—especially since it’s been cold, and I left all my awesome wintery stuff at home this summer. I mean, really, who knew? So, anyway, when Sean wanted to run an errand in that direction, I asked him to stop in (he has a friend who works there) and find out the price I wanted to know. He came back wearing three awesome colours of them, and although they didn’t have the peacock blue I was hoping for, they did have a fabulous royal purple colour that I was obviously attraced to. The next day—POOF! There it was! The day was winding down, and we were restocking and starting to get a little silly . . . and then, POOF! The purple fuzzy thing appeared and they all had “sheepish” grins!

Did I mention I have wonderful friends?

Well, much like I’ve noticed in the past with my older ones, Artemis loves this scarf. She nestles her head in it when I’m wearing it, and she’s on my lap. And, today, I found her sleeping on my bed in the middle of this bright purple scarf. Too cute! I, of course, had to take her photo. So, today, instead of being my pink and white cat, she’s my purple and white cat!

One further note: the scarf was on the bed, because I’ve been wearing it while I sleep—it’s cold here!
