A Groovy Field Trip and a Grateful Heart

Gal Pals Breakfast

3 October 2009

Despite the lateness of the hour that most of us went to bed, we were up early on Saturday morning, and ready to have adventures.   It was Field Trip Day!  The plan for the day was for the seven of us to drive to Cleveland to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.  We did a pretty good job of getting out of the house early, although we did break down and make some coffee at home before going out to breakfast.  La Chatelaine (a very nice place, remarkably similar both in design and menu, to La Madeleine) served us a delightful breakfast, with each of us getting what we wanted to eat to start our day . . . eggs, french toast, quiche, fruit, eclaires, hot chocolate, orange juice, and of course, more coffee.  We ate, and giggled about how at least we were sitting around a different table!

We piled back into the two cars and made the (not quite) two hour trip to Cleveland.  We were at a rest stop, just twenty minutes or so from town before I ever looked at a map to see just where I was or where I was headed.  Columbus is pretty darned close to the center of the state of Ohio.  Cleveland is north and east of Columbus . . . on the shore of Lake Erie!  I had no idea!  Of course, I immediately imagined how easy the transition will be for my Kelly—how similar the cities of Racine and Cleveland might be!  Cleveland is a larger city, but it seems to have the same sort of emphasis on the arts and on lakeside living.  And, from what I saw of it, I’m anxious to go back and learn more.

We found our way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum simply by following signs,  parked and reunited our little group in the lobby of the place.  I took a few photos on the walk from parking lot to museum, and took a couple more in the lobby before carefully stowing the camera at the bottom of my purse, so I wouldn’t be tempted to break the “no photography” rules.  I certainly would have liked to have taken photos of Elvis’ purple cadillac or Stevie Nicks’ costumes, or some of the signage, that although I read, I will never be able to remember many of the facts upon them.

Founded in 1995, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a beautiful building, right on the lakefront.  It is very modern in design—lots of glass and triangular construction—and it is apparently a popular site for wedding party photos!  But, it is the interior exhibits that are really outstanding.  The temporary exhibit on the higher floors right now, is one highlighting Bruce Springsteen.  Carrie said the first time she visited it was a U2 exhibit and I thought of how much Kyle would have enjoyed that.   And, when I texted Sean to tell him how cool the place was and how much he would love it, he texted back that he’d been there ten years or so ago for a Beatles exhibit.  How wonderful it must be for those who live near enough to go visit each new exhibit!

The Hall of Fame Museum itself is an amazing collection of memorabilia.  I can barely fathom the work that goes into controlling, archiving and displaying such a vast array of objects.  And, so many audio/visual presentations—some of them very interactive.  I especially appreciated the listening stations where you picked a genre of music from the choices on the screen, then picked an artist, and the touch screen allowed you to choose which of that band’s influencing bands you wanted to hear.  So interesting to hear them back to back and really be able to hear the similarities between bands decades apart that you never have thought to compare.

We also really specifically enjoyed the video presentation about Woodstock.   I had seen some of that footage (or similar) before, but never so much at one time, and never with quite the impact.  Peace, Love and Rock and Roll!

We easily killed about five hours, lunched, and shopped the gift shop before deciding we had experienced sensory overload and it was time to head home.  Carrie’s husband Charlie (another TCU pal) was cooking dinner for us, and we were looking forward to that.  The drive back seemed to go quickly and it was good to be off our feet!

Dinner was delicious—including Cosmopolitan cocktails and a lovely little gewerztraminer,   braised pork, autumn vegetables and polenta with fontina cheese and thyme . . . and Janet’s (Charlie’s mom) homemade apple pie.  And then, when Carrie and Charlie ran across the street to watch Emma’s band perform, the rest of us walked up the street to the local favourite ice cream shoppe!  Fortunately, it was a long enough walk to help relieve at least a little of the guilt!

We all got back to the house at about the same time, and enjoyed more wonderful conversation and some great 21-year-old single malt scotch.  It was nearly one o’clock in the morning before we decided we should get some sleep.  And, even then, it was another almost two hours before Maria and I got too tired to continue our girl-talk.

Obviously, I am finishing the writing about this day . . . the next day!   As I re-read what I’ve written, I realize there is really no way to convey the special bond I feel with all of these wonderful people.  How fortunate I am to have such rich friendships in my life.  How glad I am for this opportunity to renew them.  How grateful I feel.

Carrie and Emma

Carrie and Emma

2 October 2009

Don’t you love that genetic stamp? This is our Gal Pals Weekend hostess, Carrie, and her daughter Emma. After a day of chatting and laughing, and an airport run to meet Maria’s flight, we girls all donned obnoxiously bright green t-shirts that say: “I’m just here to see Emma.” We then walked across the street, to the high school where Emma is a senior, and one of three drum majors in the marching band. And, we made sure Emma and her friends all saw her “mom and her posse!” Emma’s words!

The game didn’t go so well for the school, but the band performed well with Emma at the helm. They did a good show with a Beatles theme—brightly-coloured color guard outfits, some pretty outstanding solo brass performances, and a great little drum line. It was a fun halftime show. The visiting band was also excellent, with a really outstanding flag corps.

We Gal Pals left the bleachers after the halftime show and had our photo taken with Emma before heading back to the house. It was chilly, and there was hot cider and a choice of embellishments for it, waiting for us. We continued the evening with good talk and only just in the last few minutes have left the dining room and headed to our respective beds. I helped Carrie do some dishes before sitting down to write. And, since we are all headed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame early in the morning, I guess I’ll try to get to bed, too—after hopefully one more call with my darling husband whose job and understanding of how important my friends are to me, have made this trip possible. Thank you, Kyle.

I’m having a blast . . . the weekend is flying by!

Magic Hat #9

25 September 2009
Marita Beth & I both had errands to run today. Instead of making each other hang out twiddling thumbs in boredom at the other’s errand requirements, we went separately to our destinations even though they were (sort of) in the same part of Arlington. She didn’t want to hang out at Fry’s while I shopped for computer components, and I didn’t want to hang out in an eye glasses shop while she shopped for new frames. It was an easy decision. And, since we were in the same (sort of) part of Arlington, I suggested we meet at a newish pub that had recently opened in Mansfield. The pub, called The Firehouse Bar & Grill has 38 beers on top and at least that many more in the bottle. The bar staff was friendly and knowledgeable and managed to serve me 5 beers I’d never had – that’s a rarity.

This is one of those beers: Magic Hat #9.
Cheers.

Details of a Basket

24 September 2009
In our house, in our life, are baskets. Many, many baskets of various sizes, shapes & colours. This is one of them:

Or, at least, it’s the detail weave of one of them.

A Pumpkin and a Barrel

23 September 2009
Marita Beth hung around Bristol a bit longer than normal this year to assist Shannon in making a bunch of pumpkins for her big Pumpkin show each year in California. Although, I missed having her home those extra days, she did come home with some damned cool glass pumpkins – most of which she assisted in making. This photo is of the vine of one of those pumpkins sitting in front of a barrel that has some home-made, aging bourbon.

Cheers.

On the Plane!

Ohio Below

1 October 2009

I can’t resist doing this! I am currently sitting on a plane, surfing the internet! Is that the coolest thing or what?

I am bound for Columbus, Ohio, where I am about to spend four days with six of my best girlfriends from our TCU dormitory (which I might add, is no longer a dorm and has been made into an administration building).

As always when flying non-rev, whether or not I would get on the flight I hoped for, was a bit of a gamble. Although today, everything went as smooth as silk. I arrived at the airport later than I have for any flight I’ve taken since 9/11. I walked in, used the self-checkout, and it printed my boarding pass—not just an access pass. So, I gladly took it and read it . . . seat assignment: 4A! First class!

By nine o’clock I had a bloody mary in my hand and decided to continue my celebration by splurging on inflight internet service. I logged on and discovered a free trial offer for American Airlines’ GoGo, so I didn’t even have to pay the ten bucks! I’ve been served a great continental breakfast, and now I’ve snapped a photo out my window, uploaded it to Flickr, and completed a post to The Daily KRuMB!

It’s gonna be a great weekend! Gal Pals, here I come!

30 September 2009

The end of the month of September—oh my goodness, where did it go?

I spent my day packing and preparing the house for my absence this weekend. I’m off to my Gal Pals Weekend! Woo Hoo!

Of course, in the middle of all that, I also had a hair appointment, and a follow-up with the chiropractor. The suitcase is now packed (for the fourth time) and I don’t think I’m taking more than two items I probably won’t wear. Packing for this trip was a real challenge—the sheer number of years since I’ve seen any of these folks is enough to make me try on everything that went in the suitcase! And sweaters take up too much space!

When Kyle got home this evening, I was realizing the third packing job wasn’t working, and I was hungry. So, he took me to Chili’s for the chicken thing I enjoy so much, and we had a good time, knowing it’ll be a while before we have a leisurely evening together again. I snapped this photo as he was signing the credit card slip just before we left.

Since we got home, I successfully finished the packing, repaired my carryon bag and got all caught up on The Daily KRuMB. Just in case I fall behind again this weekend, I thought I should bring myself current tonight.

Tired now . . . hopefully I’ll be on a plane in eight hours! But, first a little sleep.

Artemis at Rest

Artemis at Rest

29 September 2009

My cute cat again. Not terribly original, I know. But, I’ve been pretty busy with moving back in, cleaning, and packing for TRF. And, I’m packing for my little getaway weekend with the Gal Pals! I am as excited about this little trip to Ohio as I could possibly be! A total of seven of us, who were best friends in the college dorm, are getting together at the Columbus, Ohio home of one of the girls. Most of these women I have not seen since the eighties—over twenty years! Thanks to Facebook, we all found each other this year, and this weekend is the result! One good thing that came of TRF’s otherwise frustrating schedule change is that my break between Bristol and TRF allows for more free weekends than in the past. I will come home on Sunday night, and have exactly one day at home before leaving to go set up the Pendragon Costumes booth at Texas Renaissance Festival. Whew! But, it will be worth it!

Anyway, today’s photo—the cat. Not the first, and surely not the last time she’ll be adequate filler for me on a busy day.
