My Wife

5 December 2009
Contrary to most years, Marita Beth & I struck out on our own fairly early in the day and only occasionally saw others of our large party. Although different, it was entirely pleasant. She & I enjoyed a lovely lunch together at Le Croy, a delightful Cajun restaurant on the Strand and it is there, that I took this photo:
My Wife. I took a large number of photos on this Saturday, but this photo of my wife is my favourite of the lot and is more indicative of the day than any of the others.
Cheers.

Friends are the Riches in My Life

Silliness at BlackFinn's

17 December 2009

It may be a struggle financially to make ends meet. But, my life is so rich in other ways: a wonderful loving family background, so many incredible memories, a home filled with beautiful antiques and unique art pieces that tell the story of where we’ve been, and most importantly, an incredible network of the best friends in the world.

Each and every one of our friends is a treasure. Friends help staff our renfaire booths. They help move heavy stuff. They are willing to help with icky cleaning and difficult building projects. They housesit and care for our dogs when we’re away—and put up with the cat! They send Christmas cards and make cookies and give charity donations in our name. They give of their professional time without charging us their professional rates. They organize events, from tailgate parties, to college reunions, to Victorian balls and provide us with lifelong memories of those good times. They are patient when it takes me way too long to sew something for them. They enjoy a good debate where our opinions differ wildly, and still buy us a beer. They understand that just because we don’t always take the time to pick up the phone, or send a card, we love them dearly and cannot imagine our lives without them.

Some of our friends are only a few blocks away—and let me tell you that rocks! Others are across town, or even down the highway a few hours’ drive. We see them less often than we like, of course. And still others, very dear to us, are in far-off Wisconsin, New York, Florida, Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Maryland . . . even Montana. Still others live in Minnesota, Mississippi, Louisiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Vermont, Pennsylvania . . . I’m sure the list goes on and on. And, now, we are adding Ohio to the long list of places that are too far away.

Our Kelly seems to be happier than we’ve ever known her to be. Her new life with her long-time friend, John, is a beautiful thing. We are thrilled for her and are looking forward to their formal nuptials next December. In the meantime, though, we must get used to her living in Ohio.

As we enjoyed an impromptu meal with them on their way out of town, I snapped this adorable photo of Kyle and Kelly and John. We love you guys! Thanks for adding to the richness of our lives.

The Press Box

4 December 2009
The Press Box is a charming neighbourhood bar/pub that is but a short 2 block walk from the Tremont. Being that it was that close and I had naught else to do, I took the short, limping walk to it and settled comfortably into the bar scene. It was here that I saw, briefly, the results of the World Cup draw. It was while sitting here that @GalvestonIsland started follwing me on Twitter, and I, her. It was also here that I found out that Galveston Island is going smoke-free on January 1. Congratulations, Galveston Island. Now, if only Ft. Worth could take that step, my bar-hopping ways would be so much more pleasant.
It’s not, please keep in mind, that I want you to stop smoking. It’s more that I don’t want to smell like your bad habit when I leave. That’s all.
The Press Box
Cheers.

Kelly’s New Apron

New Apron For Kelly

16 December 2009

One weekend during TRF, my dear Kelly randomly announced that she knew what I could make for her . . . an apron! My first thought took me back to a precious little ruffled creation I once made for Kimbelle—the perfect Christmas-cookie-baking, very girlie, pinafore-style kitchen apron, made from a holiday print depicting gingerbread men. I knew Kelly would never be caught dead in such a thing, so I was confused. When I asked for clarification, she said she wanted one of “those little aprons like you wear when you sew!”

Oh! now, I knew exactly what she wanted, and I told her I’d make it happen. I have been very true to my promise to myself to sew something every day all winter long, rather than falling out of the habit of working like I normally do in December and January. So, it was easy, now that our event season is behind us and I have the condition of the house under control, to plan to make this apron for Kelly in time for her to breeze through town and pick it up on her way north.

So, I worked on it a bit last night, and a bit more today, and got it all done. I chose a coordinating pair of blue woven fabrics—a damask and a sturdy brushed cotton, and a fun little plaid for the bias trim. I wanted it to be pretty, but a bit more tailored and sedate than the floral ones I’ve made for myslf in the past. This is a photo of the finished product. They really are quite wonderful for us, keeping tools of the trade, like scissors, marking pens, seam rippers and the like, at easy access in little custom-made pockets, and looking good besides. I originally came up with the idea because I was forever putting my scissors down and having no idea where! Now, with the apron, they are always at hand. I hope it will be as usefull for Kelly as it is for me.

For the first time in a great while, Kyle and I went out for beer and trivia on a Tuesday night, and didn’t find any of our friends at No Frills! Where was everyone?

My Mistletoe

My Mistletoe

14 December 2009

Texas weather is so weird. After a couple of weeks of downright cold, today I did yardwork in a tank top. Go figure. While I was outside and piling dead branches near the road for trash pick-up, I looked up and realized just how healthy the mistletoe is this year. Of course, that means the poor tree is sicker than ever, but, at least at this time year, I mind a little less.

Anybody want fresh, home-grown mistletoe for your holiday smooch-inducing fun? Just let me know! I’ll even ship it!

So Photogenic . . .

So Photogenic . . .

13 December 2009

This cat is so photogenic that I don’t even have to frame the photo and it still turns out okay. In fact, you can see my sweater behind her in this photo . . . I was holding the camera backwards and pointing it back toward myself with Artemis in the foreground close-up. It’s amazing how well she photographs.

I have just had yet another decadently lazy day. I slept until . . . late. Let’s just say, late. And, although I got quite a bit of computer maintenance done, I did little else. Oh, there was some laundry. And I did walk the dogs. But, that’s about it. Wow, was it wonderful.

Tomorrow, I’m back to serious housecleaning—purging, even. Getting rid of clothes I can’t wear, working on my (insert dramatic “dun-dun-dun” here) desk, and hopefully getting some yardwork done, too. But, today was a day of lounging around with the man, the dogs and the photogenic cat.

Stars

Stars

12 December 2009

Last night we attended a birthday party (Happy Birthday, Jill!) and got home much later than we’d planned. Just before going to bed, I got the bright idea to snap a photo of this neat garland of stars I have hung on the dining room chandelier—it was after midnight, and I knew that Saturday wouldn’t be a day much lending itself to interesting photos. I figured I would get a head start on myself, just in case.

Good thing! On the first official Saturday off since . . . at least September, I did nothing worth photographing. We slept late . . . really late. We watched a bunch of our recorded TV shows. In fact, I came perilously and decadently close to doing nothing whatsoever. But, hunger and a lack of pantry supplies forced us to get dressed and go out for dinner. And, once home from that, I threaded a needle and hemmed a pair of pants Kyle has been unable to wear since I purchased them . . . I think in June!

So, my day was a wonderful combination of relaxation and accomplishment! And quality time with my man. What could be better?

Mini Nutcracker Tassels

Mini Nutcracker Tassles

11 December 2009

I found these little guys on a quick shopping expedition a few weeks ago. Tuesday Morning, I think. At any rate, they are standing at attention awaiting my command as to which doorknob, hook or key to adorn for the Yule season. Right now, they are hanging from a wall-mounted oil lamp in the kitchen. They make me smile.

Favourite Flask

Favourite Flask

10 December 2009

I am still washing dishes and doing laundry and housework related to recovery from an autumn full of events. As I rinsed out flasks we took to Dickens, I stopped to realize how much I love this one.
