Tension

Blue Tension

19 January 2010
Happy Birthday, Terrill!

I just realized I haven’t been marking birthdays in the KRuMB recently. I’ll have to get better about that.

I missed Terrill’s birthday bash tonight, because I’d committed to a customer appointment. I think it must have been my subconscious telling me I needed to buckle down and work more and play less. At least the appointment was with a friend I love spending time with, so it was all good!

After the house was quiet again, husband and dogs in bed, I went back to the workshop to make the necessary changes to the new pattern and the photogenic nature of my sewing machine caught my eye. I took a few odd shots of various aspects of the machine. My photo of the day, of the tension screw on the front of the machine was my favourite, with this one, of the spring tensioner as my second favourite.

Channels on Twill

Channels

18 January 2010

Not a very exciting day for me. I should have gone out and done some erranding, but I did not. Instead, I weeded out some more stuff from our closet, and started the mock-up bodice that I’ll be trying on Starr tomorow evening. My photo is a close-up of the front of that mock-up. The rows of stitching are the boning channels and I like the way they look in macro, against the diagonal of the twill weave. It’s the simple things . . . ;-)

Scrambled Eggs, Sixteen Hands, Some Pizza and Sculpted Velvet

Vintage Sculpted Velvet

17 January 2010

The house was alive and buzzing by about 9:30 a.m. Allyson had spent the night here in the Mouse Suite, and Rod arrived around 11 o’clock. This was to be the day we attempted to spoil them a little bit in a vain attempt to somehow thank them for all they did for us last fall. I think Allyson, and sometimes both of them house- and dog-sat for us at least five weekends out of the eight at TRF. The financial savings was substantial, and the peace of mind is without measure. We wanted to say thank you with more than just a bottle of wine or a gift certificate. So, we planned a play date!

After Rod arrived we decided eating our breakfast/brunch in, where we could more easily chat and visit, and drink our bloody marys (Ally had mimosas) was the better plan than going out to spend money. So, scrambled eggs and English muffins happened. Then, it wasn’t too long before we decided to jump into one of the day’s biggest goals: teaching these two to play mah jongg.

We aren’t sure how after all these years, Allyson, at least, had never learned. But, I guess between her back and forth Texas to Wisconsin migrations there for a while, and the fact that she’s a very busy girl, she was just never at a gathering where that happened. In the years Kyle and I have been together, we (he, really) have taught dozens of people to play this wonderful game we love. Today, we added two more to the list! And, oh-my-goodness, did they catch on quickly. We have often marvelled that it always seems that the beginning player wins the day, and today Allyson was no exception to that rule. Once she had played a few hands, she really started to rock and roll and by the time the night was over, she had totally spanked us all with her high-scoring hands. And both Ally and Rod caught on well to the scoring, too! I will credit Ginger for some of that. It is she that teaches scoring so well, (after ten years of playing the game, I still couldn’t score it!) and it seems I’ve picked up her tips and teaching style well enough over the past five or six years, that where Kyle’s fabulous game and strategy teaching leave off, my scoring teaching can kick in. We are quite the teaching team, now! If you want to learn Mah Jongg, just give us a call!

We took one break from our game to go to dinner. We had decided on our first visit to Brix Pizza and Wine Bar, that it would be the perfect place to take Allyson and Rod, and of course, tonight was the night. We ordered a giant Prosciutto and Spinach Margherita Pizza and a heavenly bottle of Valpollicella. It was delicious all around, and we went home satisfied and happy to resume our tile twittering.

Kyle says he thinks this was the first time he’s ever played an entire 16-hand game of Mah Jongg. I hope it’s not the last. Eventually, we said a reluctant goodbye to these two members of our chosen family, as they headed back home to Dallas and we began our weekend wind-down. Crawling into bed, I realized I’d had too much fun all day to even get the camera out of my purse! I snapped this close-up photo of the vintage sculpted velvet dresser scarf/ that is on my bedside table. It came out quite nicely, so it makes a beautiful ending to a beautiful day.

Pub Guys “Dry Run”

Pub Guys 1/16-4

16 January 2010

When Bryan posted to Facebook that the Pub Guys were going to do a “dry run” of their live show to work out the kinks before this Wednesday’s live gig at the Firehouse Grill, I—and I wasn’t the only one—was very amused. Pretty much nothing the Pub Guys do is “dry!”

They had their rehearsal, though, and it actually went way better than I think any of us expected it to go. Only one off-color word snuck out. Nobody got angry or defensive. Nobody droned on for too long. Nobody interrupted awkwardly or tangled his words badly. And, even though the show was all about sports, as the live show is supposed to be, I was entertained. Except for a few glitches with a new speaker system, it was an amazingly smooth session. I am so proud I can hardly stand it! Way to go, Pub Guys! Bring on the Live Show!

Nickel Grommets

Nickel Grommets

15 January 2010

I spent only the morning, today, in my workshop, and I snapped this photo while I was there. It’s a good thing, too, because the rest of the day the camera spent on my cutting table, despite the fact that I wasn’t home.

I had a delightful visit today with some old friends from faire. I pawed through (and brought home!) some lovely old fabric they were trying to help find a good home for for a friend. It was a pleasure to sit and chat and to have affirmed that there is life after retirement from renfaire!

Kyle came home from work a smidge earlier than usual, and off we went to downtown Fort Worth. We were excited about attending our first Rahr Brewery Pub Crawl. We picked up Brett; Jill met us there, as did Terrill and Brian and a couple of other friends of theirs. The event started at a place we’d never been before, called simply Grace. From there, the group went to the Flying Saucer. Then, we split up for dinner, with one third of the group going to each of three restaurants. We chose the brand new Cowtown Diner because one of our friends from No Frills Grill is the manager there, and we really wanted to support him. We were even more pleased to learn that this was actually their opening day! Our meal was delightful and we will definitely go back! After dinner, we moved across the street to Razoo’s and then finally to a smoky little pub called Paddy Reds. I could have done without that last stop, except that’s where the prizes were being given and we didn’t want to miss that. As it was, we were the last ones there and the “show” was nearly over when we arrived, even though we were on time! I think Chris, the promotional director, felt guilty about starting without us, and quickly gave us the final prize of a $10 gift certificate! Unfortunately, the place was really too loud and too smoky for us to enjoy it, so we didn’t stay long. And, it was after midnight when we got home, anyway, so it was just as well. We had a wonderful time, though. And, I’m sure we’ll do it again, when we can.

Twisted Cord

Twisted Cord

14 January 2010

A day of work for me, means I’m surrounded by pretty fabrics and trims. This is a bolt of twisted cord that I will eventually use up making drawstring pouches. For now, it takes up space on one end of my serger table.

Nothing exciting to report today . . . except that Kyle made us a quick dinner tonight of chili and macaroni and cheese—I love me some chili-mac! :-) So, it was either another photo of stuff in my workshop, or another photo of the cat! For today, our readers are spared the cat.

Bandera Margarita

6 January 2010
Not sure what prompted me to grab my wife immediately upon arriving home and head much further away than normal to visit the Mexican Inn for dinner. I wasn’t hungry, but I’m guessing my wife was. I’m not overly fond of the food at Mexican Inn since I’m not able to eat onions anymore and they make all of their tortillas from corn rather than flour; but I do love their Bandera Margarita. It’s not the type of drink I normally fancy, so its inclusion on my “I really like this drink” list is somewhat surprising. Should you find yourself at a Mexican Inn, try it.
Bandera Margarita
Cheers.

Still caring for Ferdinand the Ficus that I adopted over the winter break from my boss. This poor tree was in very bad shape when I rescued him, but he’s coming along.

Purple Haze

4 January 2010
Once again we find ourselves at the Rahr Brewery; but this time it was for a special event. The Rahr opened on Monday to host a TCU football watching party. So with great beer, a fantastic hamburger and good friends, we watched TCU close down their record-setting season with a sad loss to Boise State.

This shot of the crowd was taken as MB and I stood in line to get our hamburger from Kincaid’s. It was filtered through the purple fuzzy thing MB was wearing.
Cheers.

Kyle and an Iron Thistle

Kyle and Iron Thistle

13 January 2010

In an interesting role reversal, it was me this evening, who convinced Kyle that he really wanted to go have some beer! LOL I was hoping he would get home in time to take me to the Wednesday night Rahr Tasting event, but that didn’t happen. He did, however, make it in time to take me downtown to the Flying Saucer for Rahr Pint Night. Iron Thistle on tap and a free (keeper!) mug from which to drink it. Thanks, honey!

For those who haven’t tried this beer yet from our friends at the Rahr Brewing Company—what are you waiting for?
