Two hours was not nearly enough, but that’s how long I spent in the front yard today, weeding, cleaning out leaves, pruning, and just generally trying to reclaim some semblance of control over my little corner of the natural world. If I try to gift myself with a couple of hours out there every week before I go away, I might feel as though I haven’t been totally neglectful. Spring sure did happen without me this year. No new plants, no new mulch, no new grass—it’s a wonder—another of Mother Nature’s miracles—that the perennials are doing as well as they are with no help from me at all.
Surrounded by the plants and the squirrels and the birds, and Gaia herself, I can almost forget the evils of the world—like computer hackers who have nothing better to do with their lives than to make other people’s lives miserable and inconvenient. My apologies to anyone who has tried to visit our websites and discovered the ugly hacker’s screen. It makes me so angry. What small, sorry little people these must be, who actually think their destructive, malicious efforts are “cool.” But, “breathe,” I tell myself. This too, shall pass, and what goes around—comes around. Those awful people will ultimately reap what they sow. And, there’s my segue back to the earth . . . for she heals all things.
Practically hidden in old leaves and overzealous ivy, is this beautiful, blooming columbine plant. It was a gift from our neighbour Jerry, from across the street, when his wife Pat died. It always makes me happy to see it bloom and I think of her.
