The "Beauty" of My Neighbourhood

Powerlines on My Street

Kyle says this cluster-**** of poles and wires is right down the street from where we live!  I can honestly say, I’ve never noticed it!  Not pretty, but it makes for an interesting photo.

Sunset Over 287

Sunset over 287

13 May 2007

What a weekend!  The muggiest, most miserable weekend so far.  The worst weekend of sales so far.  The best Saturday night gathering so far.   Dad from San Antonio; Allyson from Houston; Maron and Meredith and their beautiful boys from Chicago; Chad Fabulous from Kenosha.  All these things combined to make for a fun, but exhausting weekend.

As Kyle and I and the dogs drove home—no group dinner tonight, we were too tired—I was so impressed with the beauty of the sunset, I had to try to photograph it.  Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that well.  So, I was disappointed with my pictures, and this is the best of them.  Someday, I’ll be able to make the picture in my head actually happen!

Yay Allyson!

Yay Allyson!

12 May 2007

After the slowest, hottest, muggiest day of the faire season so far, closing cannon was just the beginning for us.  There was a wild flurry of activity while we packed down the Pendragon Costumes product like we always do at night, and set up for our Wine and Cheese Party and Trunk Show for Allyson.  I’ve written before about Allyson’s beautiful jewelry and her little company called Persimmon Jewelry.  She and I had plotted and planned, since before faire started, to find a time for her to be able to show her friends at Scarborough (and their friends!) her work.  Typically, she would wear something she’d made to faire and have people comment on it, until someone would buy it off her neck!  Or, sometimes, she’d bring three or four pieces and show them around until they sold.  But, we wanted an opportunity to see all of her currently available designs at once, and have our pick!  So, a Trunk Show was the answer.

We picked a weekend when Allyson could drive up from Houston, and when there wasn’t a whole lot going on at faire, and I started to get the word out.  Emails, a few flyers and lots of word of mouth, resulted in a great turnout for our party.  I bought about eight bottles of wine (and a decent little boxed wine as a back-up), five boxes of crackers, and eleven different varieties of cheese.  I even made little signs indicating the name of each cheese.  A couple of other folks brought wine, too–including Debbie, who makes her own fabulous White Zinfandel.  By about eight o’clock or so, we were ready—we had the booth transformed into an almost elegant setting for a jewelry show.  The photo above, of Allyson and her friend Brittany, was taken at about eight-fifteen.  By 8:30, our guests were arriving, and by 9:30, we had a pretty big crowd!  I was delighted with the number of friends that showed up, and even more delighted to see them grooving on Allyson’s work!

At the end of the night, we had six empty bottles of wine, six little zippy bags of cheese chunks, and about half the jewelry we started with!  ”Yay!” to a fun party; “yay!” to a successful trunk show; and “yay!” Allyson!

Kyle’s dad was with us on Saturday, too!  Between Nonie’s birthday and Mother’s Day, Mum being in Virginia with KellyeBeth, and the need to just get the he** out of Dodge, he drove north for the weekend and enjoyed the faire on Saturday.  Of course, I think it was the knowledge of a Wine and Cheese Party on Saturday night, that really solidified his travel plans!  ;-)   And, thanks Dad, for cutting all that cheese into cubes for me!

Spider

Spider

11 May 2007

I never expected this photo to look like this!  I don’t know if it was the photographer, or her beloved little camera that wasn’t up to this particular task—probably a little bit of both!

We arrived at faire much later than I’d aimed for, and when we got there we had electrical power issues (a popped fuse) — not the best way to start the weekend.  By the time we had all that addressed, and all the stock checked in. it was very late.  I realized as I was saying goodnight to everyone, that I had gone all day with no photo.  We had noticed the plethora of eight-legged  creatures in and around the booth this week, so I thought I’d shoot one of them.  The ghostly type of image that resulted, completely surprised me.

Lizard on Brick

Lizard on Brick

10 May 2007

Exciting news:  Kyle surprised me last night with the news that he had bought my “pro” <tee hee> status membership at www.flickr.com.  I had officially run out of space, so my oldest photos were going to fall off the back end of my “storage” there.  And since I’m learning about groups and sets and stuff—and it’s fun!—he thought this was the thing to do.  I’m very happy.

Today was a full, productive day. Computer and business stuff in the early morning during coffee, but by 9:30 a.m. I was on the roof trimming tree branches!  I didn’t want more rain or storms before that job got done.I worked at it for about two hours, give or take some photography time ;-) then worked for a couple of hours before heading out to do important errands–some of which will carry into Friday, I’m afraid.  But, the really exciting part of today is that Kyle and I got to go see a movie!  Neither one of us is sure just what the last movie we saw together was, but it certainly hasn’t happened in the last three months!  We saw Spiderman 3 and very much enjoyed it.  And then, we came home and I went back to work!

So, lizards two days in a row.  Go figure.  This guy isn’t quite as large as the one I shot yesterday, but he is a bit braver.  I was pruning the trumpet vine and suddenly there he was!  Seemingly undisturbed by my rustling the leaves and vines all around him.  I shot quite a few pictures—this is my favourite.  I like the green leaves on the left and the blue paint on the right—fun contrast to the earthy colouration of the brick and the lizard himself.

I finally took the time to do a little research and this is what I’ve found:

  • The Texas Spiny Lizard is an Iguanid lizard and in the same subfamily as Horned Lizards (Phrynosomatidae).
  • They are found from the Red River south into northern and eastern Mexico.
  • They are active during the day (diurnal) and are fast-moving, agile tree climbers. They are primarily arboreal, but will bask on ground, rocks, buildings and fences.
  • Adults attain a length of up to 11″. They are a very spiny, slender lizard with long tails and long clawed toes. Dorsal ground color is light tan/grey to reddish-brown with dark broken lines. Adult males have brilliant blue patches on their sides.
  • They are sexually mature at one year and are prolific breeders. Mating occurs in early spring and eggs are laid through the summer, sometimes as many as four times a year. Eggs are laid in the soil, with clutch sizes averaging 14 eggs. The eggs hatch in 50-60 days.
  • They are voracious eaters – consuming insects, spiders and sometimes small lizards.

Hawk and Statue

30 April
My second post on the 10th of May and the final post of April (hooray!) Maybe, someday, I actually will be caught up.
Hawk and Statue
Hawk and Statue. It sounds like it should be the name of some neo-English pub rather than the title of a photo. But, the photo needed the title, because well…it’s a Hawk and a Statue. This particular morning, Marita Beth was taking me to work (for what reason, I don’t recall). We went down the side road that takes us past that beautiful English garden I photograph so frequently and Marita Beth practically split my eardrums when she yelled, “Stop! There’s a hawk on her head!” So, I backed up to take a series of photos. Marita Beth had, regretfully, left her camera at the house so the only photos taken were mine. This is when I wish my zoom was more powerful and more stable. The photo is a little blurry because I just could not hold the camera still enough and the image stabilizer wasn’t enough to compensate. Some day I’ll have a really cool camera capable of the best photo under the worst conditions. Until then, I do what I can with what I have and for the greater part am pleased.
Cheers.

Three…what a beautiful number

29 April
Yeah, I know it’s already the 10th of May. I’m getting there, however slowly.
Three...it's a lovely number
This trio of girls I proudly call friend. Freida, Delia & Carys of Queen Anne’s Lace are taking a break in front of my East Wind Games shop before joining in to walk the parade. Beautiful and talented.
Cheers
