Man and His Dog

18 April, 2007
Happy Birthday Sweetheart!
and where am I? Philadelphia. We had our meeting, then lunch with the airport GM, then off we headed to the airport for the return trip to DFW. Little did I know just what a day this was going to turn into. My boss & I were booked on the same return flight; he made it, I didn’t. My short trip to PHL resulted in a 4-hour wait in the small airport bar called “The Old Philadelphia Tavern.” Reasonably priced but too crowded, I whiled away the time swinging between pissed off, depressed & lonely in rapid time. I couldn’t believe that I was spending my wife’s birthday in a tavern in the Philadelphia airport; but such is the glory of work travel, wot?
View from the Old Philadephia Tavern
This officer strode by at a rapid pace several times with his beautiful canine companion at heel. The third time through, I had my camera ready and grabbed the shot. It’s a good thing I did, as I didn’t see him again and I would have remained unhappy about the missed opportunity. When we left the hotel that morning, I inadvertantly locked my camera in the boot of the taxi, so these airport-interior shots were to be my photos of the day. At least this one tells a story.
Cheers.

Yet Another Hotel Room

17 April, 2007
Still catching up, but I am getting there if slowly. The 17th was a Tuesday; but unlike most Tuesdays that wind down with a trip to No Frills Grill for $1 beer and trivia, I instead got on an airplane and went to the East Coast—Philadelphia, in fact. I had to attend a meeting early enough on Wednesday that there were no flights in that I could catch. So, it was an overnight trip. Jill met us at the airport and we went to Champps for dinner and drinks before retiring to the hotel in downtown Philadelphia. I tried to take photos during the cab ride, but the cabbie didn’t stay still long enough for me to get a good capture of anything; and the cobblestone streets didn’t lend themselves to good movement photography either. So, instead I’m posting a photo of the interior of my Hilton room.
The bed was just as lumpy as it looks.  And the window looks out directly onto a parking lot; what a view!
Inside the Hilton
That was my Tuesday.
Cheers.

Light Star

16 April, 2007
Most excellent. Two posts in a row, which means I’m that much closer to catching up. Part of the trick of this past-posting dance I’m having to perform here is remembering the reasons, the wherefores and the emotions surrounding the photo I’ve chosen. Sometimes it’s easy, as in—that’s the only shot of the day. Other times it’s not so easy such as this one:
Light Star
I’ve dredged through my memories and believe I’ve settled on the proper one. The photo was taken with Marita Beth’s camera rather than my own, so we must have been out without my bag. That normally happens when I’ve either a) not been home very long or b) someone else is driving. So, I believe this is the night that Marita Beth, Ginger, Laura, Larry, Denise & I went to the Black-Eyed Pea for dinner and some friendly abuse by the waitress (actually, she was quite witty & I appreciated her sense of humour). All of the above then makes this a photo of the shade over the lights above the table.
Great friends, decent food and an excellent time.
Cheers.

Chess Game

15 April, 2007
Here I am again, playing catchup still. Yesterday was mostly a wash in trying to get photos up; there was just too much to do with too little time.
Chess Pieces
This photo is of the front of my shop from the vantage point of a chess piece. The chess table is 3 1/2′ tall and sits on the front lawn of East Wind Games at Scarborough Renaissance Festival. It’s an attraction that brings many people to the lawn and thus into the shop every day. Sitting on the bench that bears my family coat-of-arms is Bill. He’s been an excellent help to me this season. Thanks, Bill.
Cheers.

Playtime with Artemis

Kitty Playtime

24 April 2007

When Kyle and I are in the bedroom, moving pillows, turning down the bed, brushing our teeth—that seems to be when Artemis is most interested in human interaction.  She wants to play.  And, of course (dogs have owners, cats have staff) we usually oblige her whim.

I snapped this (and a few others) while Kyle was playing with her and before she got so worked up about it all that she hissed and ran under the bed.  Crazy cat.

Guardian

14 April, 2007
I’m still playing catchup. Three posts yesterday, perhaps I can get three more in today, the 24th of April.
The 14th of April was a very, very cold day at Scarborough Faire but without the joy of snow as we had the previous Saturday. It was just cold, miserable & joyless.
It also appears as though I somehow messed up on the sequence. The last photo I posted yesterday; the one of the feather, was actually taken on the 14th, not the 13th. While this photo I shall post now, was taken on that Friday the 13th. I’m not sure how I made the mistake since I specifically chose a fantastical subject for a fantastical day.
Guardian
This is one of numerous guardians we have scattered through our lives. Obtained from Donna who once owned the shop I now call East Wind Games, this young dragon hangs peacefully from the ceiling at our house. Donna’s product is delightful with a fantastical, whimsical element that is hard to beat; in short they are a beautiful addition to the family.  This one is named Jade.
Cheers.

Mah Jong with George

Mah Jong with George

23 April 2007

A wonderful evening with wonderful people.  We gathered at Ginger’s for dinner tonight—Chinese delivery— and a few hands of Mah Jong with George before he returns home to Wisconsin tomorrow.  We love to play this game, and tonight we taught Laura to play!  And now, tonight for as long as I can last, and tomorrow all day, I’ll be continuing work on my order for our friend “Big Bill.”  He’ll come for a fitting tomorrow evening and by Thursday or so, his outfit should be all done!

Feather in My Cap

13 April, 2007
Friday the 13th, triskadecaphobics beware. Luckily, I’m no such creature. Born on Halloween, I’ve always been aware of and amused/amazed by superstitions and those who fall prey to such; but I’ve never been one myself. So, I met the day with nary a glance and certainly no fear or trepidation.
Feather in my Cap
This photo is of an amazing feather that my very (I miss you) dear friend Kelly procured from me. It’s amazing and fluffy and natural; it is quite unlike most of the hat feathers that vendors at Renaissance Festivals the country over try to stick in your hat. Kelly was of the opinion that I should have a fluffy feather, so there it now resides comfortably ensconced in a fabulous leather tricorn. It is lit from above by track-lighting that we installed a couple of years ago at the shop; yes this photo was taken at Scarborough Faire where we spent a very cold night in preparation for another day at East Wind Games.
Cheers.

Lonely Road

12 April, 2007
I have no choice but to post numerous times a day to get caught up. It’s difficult, at the best of times to accomplish this, but on occasion the small sacrafice can be made; that is push something to the side momentarily while I retake the task to get my photos & words online.
This photo was taken on 12 April and it, too, is being posted on 23 April:
Lonely Road
This road retreats from one of my primary driving arteries into an area that, despite lack of rainfall, almost always has some vestiges of water remaining. Enough water, in fact, that many of the local fisherman in the area take sport & solace down this mostly abandoned and overgrown road.
Cheers

Springtime in Arlington

11 April, 2007
It’s so easy to get behind. Between dead-batteries, unfamiliar cameras, business-trips, entrepreneurial endeavours and trying to have a life of some sort, it’s just so easy to get behind. So, here I am on the 23rd of April, making a post that should have been up on the 11th (my Mother’s birthday). Happy Birthday, mum!
Springtime on my Street
They’re loud, they’re obnoxious, they’re irreverent and have no sense whatsoever of the real world. They’re ill-behaved, screaming children and they infest my street; but they do make decent photographic subjects. Headed home that 11th of April, the sun was just starting it’s disappearing act silhouetting these two children as they romped with abandon in the busy street. I stopped and took the photo hoping to capture a little of the beauty of youth that these children so frequently do not display. It’s not that I dislike kids overmuch, it’s that I despise these kids. They torture my dogs, throw eggs at my house, tromp through my yard and wake me up screaming at 6:30 every Saturday morning. But, when silhoutted by a setting sun, they can even appear peaceful.
Cheers.
