Kenilworth in Black & White

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

6 January 2009
I’m sitting in a hotel room (the Radisson again), having just repacked all of my luggage for the return trip. We had a pleasant dinner of breaded plaice washed down with a good pint of John Smith while watching the unfortunate result of the Tott*ham v Burnley Carling Cup match. All of this on the heels of an otherwise lovely day.
When we got up this morning, it was a very brisk -5 degrees Celsius outside, but sunny. So, we went on up to Kenilworth Castle. Kenilworth, from all reports, is one of the largest set of Castle ruins in all of England. I must say, it was pretty remarkable.
Kenilworth Castle
And, being there on an early January morning gave us the place nearly to ourselves. Almost all of our photos are untainted by the casual tourist. Unfortunately, my camera batteries died early in the visit even though I had charged them the night before. So much for grey-market batteries, eh? So, the first half of our visit is well-documented, the second half…considerably less so (although my wife did take a lot of photos, too).
From Kenilworth, we drove on in to London. I had to make a quick stop at the Cargo facility. After all, even on vacation, duty does call. I met with the guys there for an hour or so, then we continued on to Bath road to secure lodging for the night. We are at the same Radisson Edwardian Hotel in which we started our Hogmanay journey and in a very similar room. We started off in a different room, in a different wing, on a different floor. However, Hotel issues with plumbing (boilers went out) and our issues with smoking rooms, places us in the 3rd room of the night and here we will stay. For tomorrow we must depart and return to the home of our birth if not necessarily the home of our heart.
Thank you everyone for following along with us, for encouraging us and for allowing us to share our journey, our love, our passion for this country with you.
Cheers.

Neglected Road

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

22 September 2007
Friday, and thank goodness. I got a good start on the day and was running early enough that I stopped on a sideroad to snap some shots. This road is a short little, abandoned feeder between Trinity & Mossier Valley in Ft. Worth.
Neglected Road
Perhaps abandoned is too strong a word, but it certainly is neglected. That includes the several houses (read: shacks) on the road, too. Quite an eye-opening experience driving a road like that in a "civilized" area like Ft. Worth. Makes me appreciate what I have.
Cheers.

Purple Kleenex Box

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

8 September 2007
As I've mentioned before I pay attention to the photo "assignments" that come my way via blogs & forums I subscribe to. Two of the three assignments I get each week are assigned on Friday while the third comes to me on Monday. This week's Friday assignments were Purple & Soft. It is the Wednesday after those two assignments came out, but I'm posting for that Saturday photo. This is Purple.
Purple Kleenex Box
I was driving through a parking lot in South Arlington and my eyes were drawn to the purple newspaper box and the purple lightposts just outside the Taco Bell. But, I wasn't overwhelmed with the composition opportunities. Then, but 30 feet way, someone had dropped an empty Kleenex box next to an abandoned Mexican restaurant. Aha. So, now we have a Purple Kleenex box as fulfillment for Assignment number one. I'm sure that I gathered many a look as I crawled around in the filthy parking lot looking for a good angle to shoot my Purple. I think I got it with this one. I like the overall arrangement and exectuion of the image, even though it is a photo of someone's refuse.
I threw the box in the trash. Couldn't have someone else taking a photo of a Purple Kleenex box, could I?
Cheers.

Abandoned Buggy

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

4 September 2007
It's Monday, September 10th and I'm just getting to photos taken on September 4th. The woes of a busy work schedule. The worst part about posting nearly a week after the photo was taken is that by that time I've lost the emotion that sparked the photo in the first place. I'm sure that this photo sparked some sort of righteous outrage in me. But, I can't recall exactly.
Abandoned Shopping Cart

I would imagine that I felt appalled at the state of our society. That I was angry at the volume of trash caught in the wheels. That perhaps I was even covertly thinking about how to get that shopping cart out of the drainage ditch and into my smallish car. Really, who hasn't wanted a shopping cart at one point or another. But today, six days later, I can't tell you a thing about what I was thinking.
Cheers.

Abandoned

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

14 August 2007
Some days, even when you take a bunch of photos, you choose one that is not as good as the others simply because of the story it tells. This is the case here.
abandoned
This ex-Exxon station sits on the corner of an extremely busy intersection at one of the several Arlington – Ft. Worth meeting spots. A major North-South artery meets a major East-West highway right here. And somehow, they couldn’t keep this gas station in business. Years ago, a Chevron sat on the other side of the street (the Southwest corner), but it closed down and is just a shambles of a structure now. This Exxon has only recently closed. No seems to know why, or isn’t telling. I find it very interesting that one of the largest, most-successful (financially) businesses in Corporate American history could not make a go of it at this location. It’s not as though there’s competition in the area; the nearest gas station is more than a mile in any direction from here. It’s not as though the route is not travelled. I know I personally cross this intersection no fewer than 10 times a week…and I’m not alone in doing so. Perhaps, and I admit to pleasure if it’s true, it’s a sign of coming times and the Exxon-Mobile behemoth will soon be brought to task. One can only hope.
Cheers

The Derelict

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

20 July 2007
A different route to work this morning, fresh batteries in my camera and voila!
The Derelict
Instead of taking my normal route down Trinity, I took a back road. It’s a nearly deserted route with many a photographic opportunity on it; if, that is, you’re fond of dereliction and dilapidation. For that’s what I encountered for nearly the entire length of the trek. This nearly-falling-down derelict I encountered when I had travelled approximately half of the road. Much more to come I expect.
Cheers.

"Beached"
Down the side road of the route I drive each day, this appeared. One day the road was there, the next…well, there was a boat on it. I just had to grab the photo. The bottom of the boat is essentially gone; it’s rotted straight through. This thing will never sit on water again, but it seems to have taken up residence here.
Cheers.
