Boxes at Brewery

11 April 2012

Happy Birthday, Betty Faye!
After more than two weeks without a visit to the Rahr Brewery, I decided I didn’t want to miss another event, so I went by myself tonight, for the Wednesday tour and tasting. I poured beer for a little while, and had a great time. It was a good break from mind-numbing computer work and sewing. While I was there, I saw the boxes stacked along a wall and was reminded of a photo I took many weeks ago, while the KRuMB was mostly inactive. I finally figured out how to dig it out of my phone and get it into my computer, and voila!

I also solidified a plan I hatched in my brain earlier this week. We’ve been racking our brain about just how to celebrate my upcoming natal day … it’s a big one … and since it falls on a Wednesday, I’ve decided we’ll celebrate at the Rahr!

So, next Wednesday, from five to seven-thirty, we’ll have a table “reserved” for our friends to visit with us and enjoy some awesome beer while we acknowledge my jump from middle-age to Old Lady! And, yes, the AARP card application came in the mail last week! After beer, I think we’ll drive a couple of blocks to a neat little Italian restaurant we discovered recently, called Mamma Mia’s. Mark it on your calendars … I’m only turning 50 once!

Cheers!

My Awesome Beer Crew

My Awesome Beer Crew

6 March 2011

This is a photo of the three wacky guys that worked the first shift at my beer booth Sunday morning.  I had lots of awesome volunteers during the weekend … each manager oversees two shifts of folks … and these guys were the “awesomest!”  This is Stephan, James and Keith.  I should hope to be so lucky as to have them work under me again next year!

I worked my shift, then went to a meeting of beer managers where we shared ideas with each other and the coordinators and wound down a bit.  Then, I found Kyle and we did a little shopping and then went to hear some more good music, before calling it a day and  heading home, by way of Fuzzy’s.

It was a good, long weekend—everything went well. I had a great time. When I first found out that my promotion to beer manager meant I wouldn’t be pouring beer, I’d just be overseeing the pouring of beer, I was a bit concerned that I wouldn’t enjoy it as much. And, it is different. But, I really had fun, and since it seems like I did okay, I will look forward to next year.

My View of the “Big Game”

   Posted by: crazyBobcat    in Daily

view_of_the_BigGame
When I worked at Rahr on Saturday I discovered that the numbers of volunteers to work the “Big Game” party on Sunday was dwindling; so I tossed my hat in that ring and went on in Sunday afternoon/evening. This picture is my view for the 3 hour game.

For what it’s worth, I had a great time. it would have been nice to have been able to attend all of the parties that I’d been invited to, but since I couldn’t, I chose one. One that was a) close b) devoid of youngsters and c) large enough and spread out enough that obnoxiously loud drunks weren’t overbearing.

Cheers.

Artemis on Quilt

29 January 2011

We’re official! After nearly six years of frequenting the place as patrons and fans, Kyle and I are now official volunteers at the Rahr & Sons Brewery! Today was our first day. We showed up early today, knowing the crowd would be big, but not remembering it would be Chili Cook-Off Weekend! We were welcomed gratefully, and put to work almost immediately, helping with traffic control at the back dock. But, the first time I went for a beer refill, I was quickly drafted into service at the taps. When I didn’t return, Kyle finally figured out where I was and found me pouring beer as fast as the taps would flow! He, too, was quickly put to work at a tap next to me, and there we spent the rest of the event. We had a great time, though, and look forward to the next time!

Unfortunately, neither of us got a photo of the other one behind the taps! In fact, I never even had time to think about my camera while we were there. So, I offer instead, an adorable photo of my incredibly photogenic cat.

Kyle Spinning a Plate

8 January 2011

Saturday. Not during faire season. Guess where we were from 1-3 p.m.?

After we’d enjoyed a great time at the Rahr & Sons Brewery, for their wonderful weekly tour and tasting—the Iron Thistle was flowing and the crowd was as big as we’ve ever seen it—we decided to finally visit a place we’d been hearing about but had never been to … Fred’s. Fred’s is a little place, with more space outdoors in a tent, than in their actual building. It’s a little neighborhood dive that is now booming, thanks to the amazing growth in the 7th Street area of Fort Worth. And, its popularity is not unfounded. Kyle and Kara and I shared an order of chicken fried steak that was absolutely delicious!

We killed enough time there, that we went straight from there to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History for their monthly After Hours event. This month’s theme was Rock and Roll, complete with an Elvis impersonator, and a fabulous Beatles tribute band called Me and My Monkey. We visited with Ronnie at the Museum gift shop—this was Kyle’s first visit and I think he was suitably impressed. We wandered around some of the exhibits and we played with light sabers, hula hoops and, as can be seen in my photo … plate-spinning! We spent the last couple of hours we were there enjoying the music. This event is a wonderful opportunity to see the museum without the halls being full of screaming children. And, the museum staff works to make the event different each time, with themed entertainment and focused activities. I highly recommend it!

New Year’s Eve

ZHB on New Year's Eve

31 December 2010

New Year’s Eve isn’t the same for us as it was in the fifteen years of hosting one of the few Hogmanay parties in the United States.  It’s very low key by comparison.  But, we manage to make fun where ever we are and with whatever circumstances we’re given.  This year, we were fortunate enough to be invited to a private party where our dear friend Ron was playing in the band!  Ronnie has played the bass for longer than I’ve known him, but I had never before heard him play.  The phrase “it’s about time,” doesn’t even do the situation justice!  So, we pounced on the opportunity and we had a great time.  It turns out … he’s really good! <wink>

We listened to his band–the Zane Henley Band, and then we listened to the first set by the headlining band … also named after it’s lead singer, but obviously not sticking in my head.  We toasted the New Year, sang Old Lang Syne and crawled in bed by 1:30 p.m.  Welcome 2011.
