Happy in Florida

Not so daily, anymore, is it? I have taken a break from the daily writing for the KRuMB that has lasted, quite by accident for nearly a year.  It was unintentional, and although the “freedom” has been kind of nice, the void is too great.  I miss it.  So, here I am… no guarantees right now … no solid daily commitment …let’s see how it goes. In fact, let’s see if I even remember how to attach a photo to my written words!

Currently, I am in Florida visiting my mama. We are doing our best this week, to honor my grandmother’s memory and celebrate her birthday. Gammy would have been 100 years old tomorrow. We’ve gone shopping, took a trip in the RV to see a broadway-quality show, played card games, had a few political debates, and just generally enjoyed one another’s company. My week here is passing very quickly.

As a proper resident of central Florida, my mama has decorated one of the bathrooms in her lovely home in Mickey Mouse style.  Wallpaper border, shower curtain and other accessories all display the Mouse and I, of course, love it.  For years, one of the things that has amused me greatly is a framed postcard on the wall, that depicts Mickey and Minnie at the park, and carries the printed words, “We’re happy in Florida.”  It always makes me grin because it seems to me to be a little less “we’re vacationing in FL and wanted you to know” and a little more, “we’ve retired to Florida and aren’t ever coming home!”  And, in fact, that’s very true about my mother—she really is happy in Florida and it shows!

My photo is of Mama and John at the restaurant where we had dinner tonight.  I think they are pretty cute.

‘Twas the Night Before …

   Posted by: MB    in Daily

4 March 2011

Another busy day that resulted in no camera use.  I worked the day in my workshop, the evening tasting at the Rahr, and was on my way to Fair Park for a manager’s meeting at the North Texas Irish Festival, when Kara lovingly called and said not to worry about the meeting after all.  Apparently they think I can learn all I need to learn in the few minutes before we open in the morning.  Heh.  I hope they’re right!

Actually, I’m really grateful for the night off.  We have said for years, that our “festival season” really begins with the Irish Festival in Dallas, even though we don’t work it.  We’ve always attended it, at least one day, and the snowball rolling downhill starts there!  The month of March is one of meetings and fittings and eighteen to twenty-hour days in my workshop.  It’s a month when I get little sleep and and make lots of pretty stuff. It’s my own version of March Madness!   And, by the time Scarborough Renaissance Festival opens on the second weekend in April, I will look back and barely remember most of March.  I should probably wish a Happy Birthday to all my loved ones who celebrate in March—including Stephen, John … even my mama … because it wouldn’t be the first time if I forgot some of them on the “day of.”

So, early to bed, then … yeah … sort of … it’s gonna be a long Saturday!  Irish Festival, here we come!

Happiness is …

Mama and John at Bok Tower

18 January 2011

Time to go home. I miss my husband!

Hate to leave my mama, though.

Our political, socio-economic, philosophical, and even religious views are more frequently different than the same. But, she is my mama and I adore her. And, it is a very good feeling to know that she is so very happy in her life.

I told her last night that I believe it is truly an amazing, blessed life she is living. She had the good fortune to be born to two charming parents who loved their only daughter beyond measure. She met and fell in love with a man who married her at age twenty-five and provided for her all the love and security she could have hoped for. He gave her two children, a girl and a boy, who continue to love her more than she knows. Although he died much too young and left his bride of twenty-five years (they were one month shy of their 25th wedding anniversary) to start anew, start anew she did. She turned a dear friendship into a romance and has now been married to that man for another twenty-five years! He has indulged her, provided for her, moved her to her dream climate, and continues be her perfect mate.

It is a truly wonderful thing to look at the two of them and see that “Happiness is … ” in everything they do.

Thanks Mama and John, for a wonderful visit to the Sunshine State.

Blurry Sunset

Blurry Sunset

14 January 2011

When I’m with my mama here in Florida, my body’s natural rhythms get all twisted! We sleep later, eat earlier and more often, and go to bed later. I’m living the life of retirees! And, I’d have to say I don’t hate it. In fact, I think I’m a little bit spoiled!

I don’t know where we were headed exactly—a restaurant, I’m sure!—when I snapped this photo out the back side window of the moving car. But, the sunset was pretty enough to be notable, and I was trying to capture it, despite my circumstantial handicap. Oddly enough, I ended up really liking this blurry image when I finally took a look at all the snapshots I’d taken.

So, here it is for your pleasure, as well! 😉

Above the Snow

Above the Snow

11 January 2011

I was on my way to my mama’s house in Florida when I snapped this photo out the airplane window … somewhere over Louisiana, I suppose. I was surprised to see so much snow, so close to home! Turns out, I was headed to the only state in the union—yes, including Hawaii!— that did not have snow somewhere within its borders!

TCU Medallion

9 January 2011

A few days behind my desired schedule, but it’s done! It’s finally done! I have completed my scrapbook of my TCU Years.

This photograph is of the very cool metal medallion that adorns the cover of the purple scrapbook.

This book only covers four and a half years of my life, but they were very important years! And, as such, it took me a very long time to do this project. I’d been fairly good about keeping all the pertinent stuff together and ready to go. And, a couple of years ago, I organized it all chronologically. But, so many pages required extensive journaling, and much of what I needed to say was either relying on fuzzy memories, or very steeped in strong emotion. So, it was a giant undertaking, and I am very proud of my results! I will happily share it with any of my friends who want a glimpse of who MaritaBeth was in the early eighties!

My first opportunity to show it off properly will be with my mama next week … provided I can fit it into a carry-on bag!

My New Shirt

My New Shirt

2 January 2011

Yep. I really did take a photo of my boobs. :-) This is the best they’ve ever looked in a t-shirt, that’s for sure! In fact, I wrestled just now, with the idea of titling this KRuMB post “My TCU Tits” or “My Proud Boobies” or something like that. But, I decided that was over the top! 😉 After all, my mama is already going to be a little freaked out, if she reads this! (Love you, Mama!)

The cashier who helped us at the TCU Bookstore last week, hinted that the store would be open on Sunday … “just in case.” And, sure enough, my waking thought this morning, following the high of yesterday’s game, was, “I want a championship shirt!”

So, my very patient, indulgent husband, drove me to Fort Worth where we dined at the marvelous Dutch’s Hamburger joint across from the campus, and then, like a good little TCU alum, I paid way too much for a t-shirt. But, hey, I got one with long sleeves, and—not that you can tell from this picture, but — it looks great!

Rah Rah, T-C-U!
