Destination: Edinburgh

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

For the past 15 years (or so), Marita Beth and I have hosted an ever-growing Scottish Hogmanay party at our house for New Year’s Eve. Many years ago, we started planning to be in Scotland and attend the Hogmanay in Edinburgh some year. The 15th anniversary seemed likely and appropriate, so we chose this year. There were concerns with the weakening US economy and the skyrocketing gas prices and the spectre of potential layoffs at my company. However, it seems that with the gas prices dropping, and my job security seemingly ok, we are moving forward with those plans. So, come late December, I will be in my favourite big city in the world, Edinburgh

If you’re in Edinburgh for the ring-in of the New Year, come join us.
Hogmanay, here we come.
Cheers.

Map of Mordor

Wow. How much of a geek am I?
This is the best photo I took yesterday, which doesn’t actually say very much about my photography skills, wot?
Map of Mordor
This is a hexagonal grid map of J.R.R. Tolkein’s Middle-Earth as put out by Iron Crown Games and used by permission by Middle-Earth Games. It’s a Play-by-Mail game that I am sometimes active in (although not currently). I am, however, helping them with some new scenario programming, which is kind of a kick.
Yeah, I’m a geek.
Cheers.

Map of the Grampians

   Posted by: krmb    in Daily

12 June 2007
The other morning I was doing some work on my computer before actually heading into the office for a day-long meeting. Marita Beth came up behind me and said, “Wow, that’s beautiful–let’s go there,” referring to the glorious landscape that webshots had decided to put on my desktop. Neither of us recognized it, so I went and looked at the title of the image expecting some northwestern US destination. Instead, to my delight & surprise, it was the view of a Scottish Loch in the Grampian Mountain range (northeastern Scotland). So, of course my immediate reply to Marita Beth’s “let’s go there” was “Yes. Go pack the bags.”
Grampian Mountains
We’re still here.
I keep an over-sized map of the United Kingdom in my front hall because it is the home of my heart and I retreat there as frequently as finances allow. The next trip will, almost by necessity, take us to the Grampians (although since I’m planning a December/January trip the roads may actually prevent this). I cannot recall, sadly, the exact name of the Loch in the photo (I’ll look it up later and amend this), but it must needs be a destination for me now. I recall that in order to reach the viewpoint in the picture you had to drive down the B975 (or some other three-digit number) which means slow, windy road. My kind of travel.
Cheers.
